What is dental extraction?
Dental extraction is the process where we have to extract or remove a tooth that is diseased beyond the point of saving.
When is a tooth extraction recommended?
When a tooth has a cavity that is too large and has compromised all the tooth structure to the extent that it cannot be saved, extraction is necessary. Another instance is when a tooth has a crack that extends down to the root level, preventing us from saving it.
Additionally, severe gum disease that leaves no bone to support the tooth may require extraction. In such cases, the tooth becomes wiggly, necessitating removal.
What if a tooth is infected?
If a tooth is infected, the treatment depends on the level of infection. If there is still a substantial amount of tooth structure left, a root canal and crown can save the tooth. However, if the infection has caused significant decay and the tooth cannot be saved, extraction is necessary. Severe gum disease leading to insufficient bone support also results in extraction due to infection.
Are teeth extracted during braces treatment?
During braces treatment, teeth may be extracted to make space for alignment if there is significant crowding. Although this is less common now, in cases with limited space in the mouth or jaw, extraction is sometimes necessary to achieve proper alignment.
Why are wisdom teeth removed?
Wisdom teeth are often recommended for removal because they frequently cause issues such as infection. In rare cases, where wisdom teeth are deeply embedded and not causing problems, and when removal poses a higher risk, they may be left alone.
Can general dentists extract teeth?
General dentists can extract teeth. However, if a tooth extraction is complicated due to proximity to a nerve or unusual anatomy, it may be referred to an oral surgeon for sedation and extraction.
What is bone grafting?
Bone grafting is recommended after extraction to preserve the jawbone as much as possible, especially if an implant is planned. Without a bone graft, the bone may resorb, complicating future procedures like implants or bridges. Bone grafting helps prevent bone shrinkage, similar to muscle atrophy when muscles are not used.
What are the post-operation care instructions for a tooth extraction?
After tooth extraction, it's crucial to avoid infection. Patients should refrain from eating on the affected side, avoid getting food in the socket, and steer clear of small particle foods that can cause infection. Drinking alcohol, smoking, spitting, and using straws should be avoided to prevent dislodging the blood clot or bone graft, which can lead to a painful dry socket.
When should you schedule an appointment for tooth extraction?
Schedule an appointment for tooth extraction as soon as possible since a diseased tooth can worsen over time. In cases where the disease has progressed significantly, immediate attention is necessary to control it.
